'Alea iacta est'
OUT OF HIS COMFORT ZONE
When they asked Sjang in elementary school what he wanted to be, his answer was he wanted to be an artist. That he knew from very early on, but he almost lost sight of that. Luckily, he got back on this path. Sjang graduated from art school, but actually most techniques and knowledge are self taught. By making strange choices such as following a minor in knitting he came up with ideas that are outside the box. Stepping out of his comfort zone is something Sjang does often. It avoids working on autopilot and independently of learning new things, also gives you different insights. The combination of old and new crafts, is what's so fascinating about his work.
THE WOW-FACTOR
Sjang combines different materials and techniques to create old versus new light objects. He knits, welds, woodworks, 3d prints, solders and so on. And with his craft, Sjang wants to make life and its surroundings more beautiful. To him, it doesn't have to be so heavy. He doesn't want to better the world or fix massive world problems. He just wants to create stuff that makes people happy. Amaze them. To let them have that ‘wow-factor’. His dream? To eventually be at the top of the design world. And to get acknowledgement for what he does and the products he makes.
