'Creating is the most intense excitement one can come to know'
EVER-CHANGING AND DEVELOPING
The ability to create a piece of fabric from an unruly mass of fibers is a magical, constantly fascinating process for Veronica. And each new warp presents a new set of dilemmas to solve, so her work is ever-changing and developing. Weaving was addictive to her. She remembers her first attempts on a table loom, passing the weft through the warp, discovering the patterns that emerged. Veronica could continue weaving long after the end of the lesson. She studied Fashion and Textiles at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. Weaving was taught throughout the first 3 years of the course, and from the start she was immediately drawn to the looms in the textile department.
GOOD DESIGN GIVES PLEASURE AND VALUE
Veronica is a handweaver and she makes unique handwoven textiles from natural materials and reclaimed/recycled materials. She turns these fabrics into items for interiors such as cushions and wall art. Good art and design gives value and pleasure to life. A beautiful piece of art or handmade item accompanies you through life, through the good times and bad; in the latter it can bring comfort, and when well designed, it is a pleasure every time you use it. Knowing that an item has been made by a person, investing their time, energy, knowledge and love makes that item personal and special. According to Veronica, this is something which has been lost in our current increasingly uniform, mass-produced world.
TEXTILES HAVE PERMANENCE AND MEANING
To Veronica, material is key. With that as a starting point, she gives value and meaning to apparently worthless and waste items collected over time. Combining texture, color, pattern and three-dimensional elements to convey an emotion, feeling or memory, she reacts to the (waste) material and its history through various weaving techniques. The product tells the story of the material, where it came from and what has happened to it during its life. She believes that textiles have a permanence and meaning in peoples’ lives, carrying memories and traditions.
